There were rivers to cross and hills to climb, but Little House on the Prairie is finally getting the revival it deserves.
More than 40 years after its original run on NBC, the beloved family drama is making a comeback on Netflix. Little House on the Prairie aired for nine seasons from 1974 to 1983 and was based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s semi-autobiographical books about growing up in the American West in the late 1800s.
The streamer announced the adaptation in January 2025, following early buzz that began in 2020. Rebecca Sonnenshine, who previously worked on The Boys and The Vampire Diaries, will serve as executive producer and showrunner, telling Variety in a statement that she “fell deeply in love” with the books as a kid.
“They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new global audience with Netflix,” she said.
Joining her as an executive producer is Trip Friendly, whose father was one of the original producers of the show. He said in a statement that it’s been a “long-held dream” to remake the series and continue his dad’s legacy.
Here’s everything we know so far about Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie adaptation.

The show’s official logline describes the series as “part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West.” Like Wilder’s novels — which were published primarily in the 1930s and 1940s — Netflix’s adaptation will offer “a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.”
Melissa Gilbert, who originated the role of Laura Ingalls, told PEOPLE in February 2025 that the remake will “hew closer” to the books than the 1970s series did.
“There’s a lot of information and beautiful stories to mine from the actual writings of Little House,” the actress said. “There’s no reason to go off-roading and adding characters that didn’t exist. There’s plenty of people in the Little House world that still haven’t been talked about on our version of the show.”

In May 2025, Netflix announced the new faces set to bring the iconic Ingallses to life. Alice Halsey will star as young heroine Laura Ingalls, with Skywalker Hughes as her older sister, Mary Ingalls. Luke Bracey and Crosby Fitzgerald will play their parents, Charles Ingalls and Caroline Ingalls.
Other series regulars include Jocko Sims and Warren Christie, who will portray characters from the books: Dr. George Tann, a kind-hearted doctor of the Osage Diminished Reserve, and Civil War veteran John Edwards, respectively.
